Response to the report

The General Purpose Standing Committee released its report on 8 December 2005.  The legal profession welcomed the committee's findings which were broadly consistent with the profession's position outlined in its submissions.  The report represents a well reasoned response to community calls for re-adjustment to the various enactments made throughout 1999-2002.  The committee found that with hindsight the reforms went too far and that 'under the current law in New South Wales, injured individuals are in some instances limited in their access to compensation where community standards would suggest that they deserve greater recompense'.
